“Ringing in my ear was driving me nuts. I have seen many doctors and none of them gave me any hope for the ringing. Jeff let me try aids to see if it would help. Now I no longer have the annoying ringing, plus I hear great!”

To Whom This May Concern,

My first experience with a hearing test took place in December 2011. I was extremely nervous and unsure what to expect. My first encounter was meeting the manager, Keri Ruf, who greeted me at the front desk. She was very kind and extremely professional. She calmed me to the point I was able to continue the appointment. I was then introduced to the hearing aid specialist, Kristy Madsen, who was extremely knowledgeable and so funny and a pleasure to be around. It was a great experience and I have since recommended several other patients to visit the Penta Hearing Care in Wayne, New Jersey. Kudos to Keri Ruf and Kristy Madsen, they are truly assets to your organization.

In recent years, researchers have undertaken a number of successful animal studies to repair damage to the inner ear through the transplantation of stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood. Now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for the first study using cord blood stem cells to treat sensorineural hearing loss in children.

The study will be conducted at Childrens’ Memorial Hermann Hospital and Cord Blood Registry in Houston, Texas. The subjects will be ten infants, aged six weeks to eighteen months, who suffered hearing loss after birth. Children with hearing loss due to genetic disorders will not be included in the study. Due to the increased survival rate of infants born prematurely, the indigence of hearing loss in young children has continued to increase.

The infants will receive stem cells obtained from their own stored umbilical cord blood. The stem cells will be introduced through an IV infusion on an outpatient basis. Periodic evaluations will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. . The principal investigator, otolaryngologist Samer Fakhri, M.D., is hopeful that his study will lead to a non-surgical treatment for hearing loss in children.

Dear Shannon,

Thank you so much for introducing and recommending the Starkey Wi-Series (ITE) hearing aids. They are absolutely remarkable! My husband and I cannot believe how my hearing has improved. When at a meeting, I can actually hear what everyone says instead of asking, “What did they say?” While listening to the TV on Food Network, I heard an noise and thought, “What was that”? When I looked up I saw the Chef opening up a cellophane package. To me, this ability is just remarkable and beyond my expectations.

The Surflink TV device is also such and improvement over my TV Ears. I can listen to TV and increase or decrease the volume without disturbing my husband. We can carry on a conversation now without having to take off the TV Ears.

Again, thank you for your expertise, but also for your compassion and truly caring.

Sincerely,
Phyllis H., Vernon, CT

“I brought my mom to the Sears Hearing Aid Center in Lafayette to have her hearing aids checked and adjusted. The staff went ABOVE and BEYOND and they were very kind to her. I’m not sure how to explain it but they were very mature, responsible, kind and considerate. I’ve never written a note of this type, but I was very impressed. Thanks so much to you all.”

Are You A Hearing Helper

Are you a “Hearing Helper”? When a loved one refuses to seek help for a hearing loss, or denies the existence of hearing loss, the spouse is often pushed into the Hearing Helper role. Hearing Helpers may answer questions for their spouse, interpret a conversation that was misunderstood, take over telephone communications, or engage in other activities to mitigate the effects of the hearing loss. Most of all, Hearing Helpers must frequently repeat themselves, day in and day out.

Although the Hearing Helper feels they provide a valuable service to the hearing-impaired loved one, the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) believes that this type of assistance is not in the best interest of either party. With the Hearing Helper nearby, the hearing-impaired individual does not have to deal directly with the negative consequences of that his or her disability, and can comfortably deny the presence of the hearing loss. The Helper becomes increasingly fatigued and frustrated by the extra burden he or she carries, which can result in anger and resentment.

The Better Hearing Institute offers suggestions to assist Hearing Helpers to break the cycle of codependent behavior which interferes with the aural rehabilitation process. The BHI website offers a questionnaire to help determine if you are a Hearing Helper. Below the questionnaire are “10 Suggestions to Your Loved One’s Independent Hearing”, followed by some practical tips to follow.
The tips include:

  • Don’t repeat yourself
  • Don’t raise your voice
  • Don’t be the messenger
  • Don’t attempt conversation from another room
  • Don’t be the telephone interpreter

When handled in a positive, loving manner, your refusal to be the Hearing Helper will truly help your loved one to seek the professional services which can lead him or her back to hearing independence.

“I just wanted to let everyone know how pleased I am with my Silvertone BTE hearing aids. I think I tried just about every available style of hearing aids and am appreciative of the Hearing Specialist’s patience in getting me here.

I find that I am better able to hear all of the discussions at the meetings and seminars that I attend and in particular, I am pleased at how well I am able to enjoy music now. I am fond of almost all types of music and also enjoy attending concerts (from classical to Jimmy Buffett to jazz) and I have found that I can enjoy them all very well with my hearing aids. In fact, better than I have with any previous hearing aids that I have worn (and I’ve been wearing hearing aids for over 10 years now). I can even hear my wife a lot better and that has some distinct advantages.

I will return to Sears Hearing Aid Center for a check up soon just to make sure everything is work well, but it sure seems to be doing well now. Thanks again for providing me with great hearing.
